Accelerating Climate Action in California

Grantee: The Climate Center

The State of California has been a world leader on climate, modeling strong policy and innovation that has been adopted by states and even nations looking to curb their carbon emissions. Through our focus on sustainability and California conservation, the Flora L. Thornton Foundation is proud to support The Climate Center, a climate policy non-profit working for rapid greenhouse gas reductions at scale to align with the current climate reality.

The Climate Center, founded in 2001, played a key role in the tremendous growth of Community Choice Agencies (CCAs) in the state over the past 6 years, with 24 CCAs now providing on average 81% greenhouse gas-free electricity to over 11 million residents in more than 200 cities/counties.

The Climate Center's Climate-Safe California campaign aims to accelerate state climate policy timelines and achieve net-negative emissions– capturing more carbon than we are emitting– by 2030, while also ensuring resilient, thriving communities for all Californians. This is possible through a bold suite of policies for rapid and equitable fossil fuel phase-out, increased carbon sequestration in natural and working lands, investments in community resilience, and generating funds for speed and scale climate action.

Our funding has supported this exciting campaign, which in tandem with other Thornton grantees reflect a commitment to decarbonizing fast to address the climate crisis. You can learn more or get involved by visiting theclimatecenter.org or @climatecampaign on Twitter. The center is urgently seeking sign ons and support for the Climate-Safe California campaign.
