How We Give

The Flora L. Thornton Foundation has assets of approximately $50 million and gives $2.5 million in annual grants spread over close to 100 different grantees over the last several years. Grantees and grant allocations vary from year to year.

Our giving has evolved to include a significant portfolio of grants focused on climate, conservation, nutrition, and social equity, with a preference for California-based organizations. In addition, the support funds the arts through our Los Angeles Community and Culture program and locally in the Bay Area.

Grants are initiated and stewarded by individual trustees who are assisted by a small staff providing administrative and collaborative support to the family members. The family trustees meet several times a year to discuss their grants ideas and approvals are always unanimous.

The Flora L. Thornton Foundation does not accept unsolicited proposals.
