Grantee: Students Run LA

If any Thornton grantee reflects diversity, energy and commitment to change it’s Students Run LA, one of the most dynamic nonprofits in the city today. Helping traditionally overlooked students to reach higher, Students Run LA prepares and trains young people for a truly life-changing experience: running the Los Angeles Marathon.

Through this program, students run the marathon but gain so much more: mentorship; a sense of belonging; cross-cultural learning; discipline and self-confidence. Each year more than 3000 students from nearly 200 schools are engaged in the program, which has hundreds of volunteers and is the source of inspiration for so many in Los Angeles.

The Flora L. Thornton Foundation has funded Students Run LA since 2010 as part of our Los Angeles Community and Culture program, which supports cultural and educational institutions in the city as well as nonprofits that address inequality and help the less privileged. We’re proud of this work -you can learn more at www.srla.org or on Twitter.
